She wasn’t sure what she felt anymore. Emptiness, confusion, physical pain, fear – all those certainly and yes, she needed to admit it, anger too. Just about every emotion had kept company with her through the dark hours since his death, and now, exhausted by it all, she had come to be near him for the last time, to say her own farewell, although even that seemed denied her now.
It was still dark when she had left the house that morning and, shivering in the cold, fresh air of a new day yet to break, her senses suddenly became alive again and she was aware of the feel of dewy grass around her feet, the sharp aroma of the garden shrubs – such a contrast to Friday and the smell of the city’s rubbish dump, the site of execution, with its stink of rotting vegetation and the smell of fear and death.
Yet even here he had made a difference, as the scent of the perfume that she had so lovingly lavished on him a few days earlier still lingered, speaking its own message of sacrificial love, pervading the evil smell of corruption, and betrayal.
